16-Day Tanzania Adventure with Purpose: Bandari, Safari & Zanzibar
TOUR HIGHLIGHT
Experience Tanzania beyond the traditional safari on this meaningful 16-day journey combining wildlife, culture, community and island relaxation. Spend time with the children and community at Bandari School in Mto wa Mbu, explore the legendary Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, discover Maasai culture and village life, then complete your adventure on the beautiful beaches and historic streets of Zanzibar.
A special part of this journey is its purpose. Your visit helps support life-changing English-based education for Tanzanian children through the Bandari School sponsorship program, creating a connection between your Tanzanian adventure and the local community.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by your local Tanzanian hosts. Transfer to Arusha while enjoying your first views of Tanzania’s landscapes, roadside markets and everyday life. After settling into your accommodation, take time to rest before gathering for a relaxed group dinner at a local restaurant, your first introduction to Tanzanian food, hospitality and culture.
Day 2: Arusha – Mto wa Mbu
After breakfast, explore a little more of Arusha, including a visit to a local art gallery and cultural collection, before travelling through Maasai country toward Mto wa Mbu. After lunch and check-in, explore the village and surrounding countryside by bicycle, with views toward Lake Manyara and possible wildlife sightings along the way. Finish the day with a tuk-tuk ride to a traditional village setting for a special home-style dinner.
Day 3: Welcome to Bandari School
Today you’ll experience the heart of the journey with your first visit to Bandari School. Tour the classrooms, kitchen, gardens and gathering spaces, meet the school community and share lunch with the children. You’ll also help unpack school supplies brought by the group, providing useful learning and classroom materials. For travellers connected with a sponsored child, this is also an opportunity for the relationship to begin naturally within the school environment.
Day 4: A Day at Bandari
Return to Bandari and settle into the part of school life where you feel most connected. You might spend time with the children, join classroom activities, help in the kitchen or gardens, assist with supplies, painting or practical projects, or simply be present with the school community. Share morning tea and lunch with the children and staff before returning to your lodge for an evening of rest, reflection and dinner.
Day 5: Mto wa Mbu – Serengeti National Park
Leave Mto wa Mbu and begin your safari adventure into Serengeti National Park. Travel through open countryside and Maasai landscapes before entering one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife areas. Spend the day looking for giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, elephants, lions, buffalo, leopards and other wildlife, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Arrive at your luxury tented camp in the late afternoon and enjoy sunset and dinner in the Serengeti.
Day 6: Serengeti Safari & Optional Balloon Experience
Start the day with the option of an unforgettable sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti. Those not joining the balloon experience can enjoy a relaxed breakfast at camp before the group reunites for more game viewing. Continue exploring the Serengeti in search of elephants, lions, hippos, hyenas, warthogs and spectacular birdlife before returning to camp for a relaxing evening and dinner.Â
Day 7: Serengeti – Ngorongoro
Continue your journey through the Serengeti toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, enjoying wildlife viewing along the way. After a picnic lunch, arrive near Ngorongoro and settle into your campsite for an atmospheric night beneath the African sky. Gather around the campfire for dinner prepared by your personal chef and reflect on another memorable day in the wilderness.
Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater – Mto wa Mbu
Descend into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater for a full safari experience within this vast natural amphitheatre. Search for lions, elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and abundant birdlife across the crater floor. After exploring this extraordinary ecosystem, travel back to Mto wa Mbu, where dinner awaits at your lodge.
Day 9: Bandari School & Sponsor Child Visit
Return to Bandari School and reconnect with the children and staff. Later, visit the local market before travelling with a Bandari teacher or social worker to meet your sponsor child and their family at home. This meaningful experience offers a deeper understanding of daily family life and the role education can play in creating opportunities for children and their families. Return to the lodge for reflection and dinner.
Day 10: Bandari & Maasai Village Experience
Spend another morning at Bandari, joining activities and spending time with the school community. Later, visit a Maasai village to learn about traditional family life, clothing, food, livestock and the relationship between the Maasai people, their land and community. Return to your lodge for dinner.
Day 11: Goodbye Bandari
Spend your final day at Bandari with the children and staff, revisiting projects or simply enjoying time with the people you have come to know. In the evening, travel to a lakeside resort for a memorable farewell experience beneath a giant baobab tree. Relax, swim, enjoy a meal and watch the colours of sunset spread across the lake, keeping an eye out for hippos in the distance.
Day 12: Mto wa Mbu – Arusha – Zanzibar
Say goodbye to Mto wa Mbu and travel to Arusha for your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and continue north to Nungwi Beach. Check into your beachside resort and spend the evening at leisure, walking along the beach, enjoying a waterside restaurant or simply watching the Indian Ocean sunset.
Day 13: Zanzibar – Nungwi Beach
Enjoy a completely free day in Nungwi. Swim in the warm Indian Ocean, explore local markets, visit nearby attractions such as the turtle sanctuary, enjoy fresh seafood or simply relax at your resort and embrace the slower rhythm of island life.
Day 14: Nungwi – Stone Town
After breakfast, travel from Nungwi to historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed destination. Discover a fascinating atmosphere of narrow streets, carved wooden doors, markets, oceanfront promenades and architecture shaped by African, Arab, Indian and European influences. Spend the evening exploring and dining at your own pace.
Day 15: Stone Town Walking Tour & Optional Spice Farm
Join a guided walking tour through Stone Town, learning about Zanzibar’s complex history while exploring markets, historic sites and colourful local streets. In the afternoon, you can take an optional spice farm tour to discover how Zanzibar’s famous cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and pepper are grown and harvested.
Day 16: Prison Island & Love Island
Weather permitting, take an optional boat trip to Prison Island, known for its history, turquoise waters and giant tortoises. Depending on conditions, the excursion may also include a stop at the nearby sandbank known as Love Island for swimming and relaxation.
