6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Marangu Route
TOUR HIGHLIGHT
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular and straightforward paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 6-day trek offers hut accommodation, gradual ascents, and stunning views through varied landscapes—from rainforest to alpine desert. It is ideal for first-time trekkers seeking a manageable and scenic climb with a higher level of comfort.
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860 m) – Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, transfer to Marangu Gate where registration and briefing take place. Begin your trek through lush rainforest, encountering colobus monkeys and exotic birds. Arrive at Mandara Hut after a 4–5 hour walk. Relax, enjoy dinner, and spend the night in mountain huts.
Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Continue trekking through rainforest and then transition into moorland. You’ll have panoramic views of Mawenzi and, on clear days, Kibo Peak. Reach Horombo Hut after a 5–6 hour hike. Enjoy a hearty meal and rest in the comfortable hut.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Spend the day acclimatizing to the altitude. Optional hike to Zebra Rocks (3,980 m) or toward Mawenzi Hut to aid acclimatization. Return to Horombo Hut for meals and overnight.
Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,703 m)
Ascend through alpine desert toward Kibo Hut, passing the Last Water Point. The trek takes 5–6 hours. Upon arrival, rest and prepare for the early morning summit attempt. Early dinner and early bedtime.
Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut
Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Climb through the dark using headlamps, reaching Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) at sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate and take photos, then begin the descent to Kibo for a short rest. Continue to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha
After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Sign out and receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest or onward travel.
