7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is the only trail approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, offering a quiet and less-crowded experience. It’s ideal for those looking for a remote, scenic climb with a high success rate. With gradual ascents and excellent acclimatization, this 7-day itinerary traverses forest, moorland, and alpine zones, ending with a stunning summit at Uhuru Peak and descent through the southern Marangu Route.

Day 1: Nalemoru Gate (1,990 m) – Simba Camp (2,625 m)

After breakfast, drive from Moshi or Arusha to Nalemoru Gate for registration and briefing. Begin trekking through a pine forest with occasional wildlife sightings. Arrive at Simba Camp after 4–5 hours. Dinner and overnight in tents.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp (3,480 m)

Continue trekking through moorland with expansive views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields. Reach Second Cave Camp after 5–6 hours of gradual ascent. Enjoy a hot meal and a restful evening in your tent.

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,630 m)

Ascend steadily with great views of Mawenzi Peak. The trek becomes steeper as you approach Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley. Trek time: 3–4 hours. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m)

A short but steep climb leads to Mawenzi Tarn, situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. Spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding area or resting to aid acclimatization. Trek time: 3–4 hours.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,703 m)

Cross the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Reach Kibo Hut by early afternoon and prepare for the summit push. Early dinner and rest in preparation for a midnight departure. Trek time: 4–6 hours.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Start the final ascent around midnight, reaching Gilman’s Point at sunrise and continuing to Uhuru Peak. Celebrate your achievement at Africa’s highest point. Descend to Kibo Hut for a break, then continue to Horombo Hut for overnight. Total trekking time: 12–14 hours.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha

Descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha. Trek time: 5–7 hours.
