8-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Lemosho Route
TOUR HIGHLIGHT
The Lemosho Route is considered the most scenic trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic vistas, rich biodiversity, and excellent acclimatization over a longer approach. This 8-day trek is perfect for climbers seeking a quieter, more gradual route with diverse landscapes ranging from rainforest to alpine desert and arctic summit conditions.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,100 m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 m)
Drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration and briefing. Begin your trek through lush rainforest filled with colobus monkeys and birdlife. Reach Mti Mkubwa Camp after a 3–4 hour hike. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m)
Continue through the forest and enter the heather and moorland zone. Ascend to the Shira Plateau for sweeping views of Kilimanjaro and surrounding terrain. Trekking time: 5–6 hours. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m)
Take a leisurely hike across the plateau to Shira 2 Camp, gaining minimal elevation to aid acclimatization. Enjoy spectacular views and explore the plateau’s unique flora. Trek time: 3–4 hours.
Day 4: Shira 2 – Lava Tower (4,630 m) – Barranco Camp (3,976 m)
Climb up to Lava Tower for lunch and then descend to Barranco Camp for overnight. This climb-high, sleep-low day is crucial for altitude acclimatization. Expect 6–8 hours of trekking. Enjoy views of the iconic Barranco Wall.
Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995 m)
After breakfast, ascend the steep Barranco Wall for incredible views. Continue on a gentler path through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. Trekking time: 4–5 hours. Dinner and overnight in camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673 m)
Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, the launch point for the summit push. Pass through alpine desert landscapes and arrive in the early afternoon to rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Trek time: 3–4 hours.
Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp (3,110 m)
Start the summit attempt just after midnight. Reach Stella Point at dawn and then Uhuru Peak—the roof of Africa. After celebrating, descend to Barafu Camp for a short break before continuing to Mweka Camp. Total trekking time: 12–15 hours.
Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and meet your transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for relaxation or onward travel. Trek time: 3–4 hours.
